2012 White Water Rafting
Dung and Kent invited Shalimar and me to go river rafting with her friends on the American River in Lotus, California, near Coloma. Our raft had nine people including Andrew, Dung's friend Tuan, his two kids, and our guide. Everyone had a great time, but Shalimar had more fun than everyone else when she fell into the river around Satan's Cesspool. After hitting some strong rapids, I heard Dung yell out something to the effect that "Shalimar went overboard!!". Shalimar was sitting at the back of the raft behind me so I immediately turned around and saw that she wasn't there. Shalimar was gone! When I looked off the starboard side of the raft, Shalimar was already a good 50 feet away floating down the river, on her back, feet first. She was moving fast! Our guide and the rest of us on the boat yelled out to Shalimar to swim towards the raft, but she couldn't hear us over the sound of the rushing water. It didn't take long before her body rotated 180 degrees such that her head was pointed downstream. Even though Shalimar was wearing a helmet, I was terrified when I saw her headed towards an embankment of rocks. I think I even yelled out to the guide that her head was pointed in the "wrong direction"! At that moment, our guide Chase said that the raft behind us was able to get to her. Whew! After the river calmed down, Shalimar was returned to our raft, smiling. :-)

Shalimar is enjoying the campfire. This photo was shot hand-held using a 8-15mm Fisheye lens. This lens is so wide that you can see my feet at the bottom of the circular photo.
